How to Find Trust Worthy Contractors
The Remodeling Industry has a definite stigma when it comes to trustworthy contractors. It seems that they are few and far between... or so most people think! Thankfully there are several small businesses that are locally owned and take great pride in their name and reputation! If you ever do find a trustworthy contractor, ask them who they would recommend for your different projects. Usually, contractors who hold a higher integrity, tend to work or have relationships with other contractors who hold the same standards.
Another good way to find a trustworthy contractor would be to find someone who is certified for their industry. In the flooring industry here in Kansas, it is not state law to be certified. Any person can come up with a business name, some tools and convince others they are a professional floor refinisher, installer, etc. It is very simple to pull pictures off of the internet and show them as "jobs completed". I have even heard of family/friends pretending to be past customers as referral sources of these fly by night, rent-a-tool contractors. We are a small business and do not have a huge marketing budget. However, where we do spend the extra dollars is training and learning so our work will speak for itself. It is hard to believe with all of the wood floor companies popping up and appearing on internet searches, that we are still the only company certified through the National Wood Floor Association for installation, sanding and refinishing, as well as wood floor sales!
There is usually some sort of association with any industry. Research to see if your new contractor is a member, but then even take it a step further to see if they are certified by the association. Remember nobody must be certified normally, however the few that take the time to take the classes and then physically prove their standards to become certified are usually the people you want in your home working on your projects.
Reviews, reviews, reviews. Do your due diligence and research how others have reviewed the company. Type in the company's name and "reviews" into a couple of different search engines to see what you come up with. Don't always trust the reviews on their actual business website either. I was on a business' website last night that I have been hearing several complaints about for the past few years because of their craftsmanship and customer service. According to their "reviews" listed on their website, they have over 300+ reviews and have an almost perfect score. However, if you search them online in a generic search and read actual reviews on Google, FaceBook, etc. the picture isn't so pretty.
Let me say this though, not every project will turn out perfectly. Even the best companies in town cannot be perfect 100% of the time. But how do they handle those situations? Do they listen to the customer? Do they find a solution that will please the customer? This is what you want. So even if a customer gave someone a 3 or 4-star review, read about what happened. Maybe there was a hiccup that no one was expecting, but what does the customer say about how the company handled the situation? I would still give a contractor my business with a review of a hiccup happening, but then they did everything in their power to fix it. To me, that says a lot about the integrity of the business and that I will be able to call them in the future if anything else arrises.
My last piece of advice is to be patient. The good contractors out there are usually pretty darn busy. If they are booked out for a few months, figure out what will work best with your schedule and make it work. Remember, there is a reason why they cannot start on the job today, and it's usually a pretty good reason.

A Well Lit Hand Scraped Wood Floor!
Being in the wood floor industry, we see just about everything that could possibly go right or wrong with a wood floor. We try to give all of our customers the best advice we possibly could, to help them to maintain the "perfect floor". Never did we anticipate that our very own showroom would become victim to water damage!
One day, "Out of No Where", a HUGE hump placed itself on our showroom floor. It was literally like walking up a hill made out of wood floor. There was no sign of cupping, just a large hill. We began to search for the reason of this sudden terrain change in our showroom and noticed the floor around our HVAC system was nice and wet. The HVAC and the "hill" were a good 12 ft, or so, away from each other... So this could not mean any good news for us.
Thankfully we knew just the right company to call.... Wichita Wood Floor Specialists of course! We began by tearing out the damaged flooring, noticed the subfloor was wet as well and so had to tear that out as well. There was a huge surprise for us under the subfloor... LOTS of water! It was SO much worse than we had anticipated! We ended up having to tear out a 1/3 of our showroom floor along with the subfloor and had to completely rebuild it back up.
So what better to do with such a tragedy, than to make something AMAZING out of it!? We decided this was our opportunity to really show everyone what is possible with a wood floor. When folks come in to visit our showroom we like to use the term "Your Imagination is the Limit", but I don't think anyone takes us too seriously on it. So what better of a way than to recreate our Amazing city's flag with a light in the middle?
We called around to the "Best of the Best" in the Wood Floor Industry to try to receive some advice on how to properly install a light in the middle of our floor. We could not find anyone else that had attempted this before, so it was all the more reason to do it!
As the project got underway, the more ideas kept coming along with it. We ended up using Blue Stained Hickory (which really is NOT stained blue) for the entire flag, except for the medallion in the middle. For the middle we used End Cut Ponderosa Pine. Along the edges of the flag and in between each section of the flag we inlayed brass to help define each section. We then hand scraped all of the Hickory, which not only looks beautiful, but I feel gives it more of a "Waving Flag" look.
The medallion in the middle was the tricky part. Luckily we had met a gentleman by the name of Luis who owns a company name Karve here in Wichita who was a MASTER with a CNC machine. The first go around we tried using a Glow-in-the-Dark Epoxy. Unfortunately the wood acted like wood (go figure!) and the pores tried soaking up the epoxy before it could dry. So it was back to the drawing board!
We ended up with the idea to layer several layers of plexi-glass in the middle until it was flush with the rest of the floor. Viola! What we end up with is an AMAZING piece of artwork, with the Pride of our AMAZING city highlighted in our showroom floor!
We would love for you to help us get the word out on our artwork. Feel free to Share this Blog anywhere you like! For any questions feel free to comment below or give us a call Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm Central Standard Time. Wichita Wood Floor Specialists is located in Wichita, KS.

How to Properly Protect Your Floors from Your Furniture
If you are the owner of a wood floor, you understand the constant frustration of trying to keep felt pads on your furniture so your floors will not end up with scratches all over them. Especially if you are a parent and your children love to scoot furniture around the house for fun! For some reason, our boys are the masters of scooting furniture across the floor for no apparent reason. With owning a wood floor business and having wood floors in our home, we were at our wits end when it came to trying to keep felt on the bottom of our furniture.
So after some serious research we came across this amazing product called Flexi Felt. Now when I first saw the product video, I thought there is no way this product is as good as they make it out to be. Check out the video for yourself and let me know what you think: Flexi Felt Video I mean, he seems like a nice guy and all but now days it seems everything is always "too good to be true".
So we went ahead and took the plunge to purchase a display case and the assortment of Flexi-Felt that is offered. We applied it to the chairs and furniture at our showroom and also the furniture in our home. The Results: AMAZING!!! This product is great AND all that he says it is. Initially the cost is a little more upfront than purchasing the cheap felt pads that fall off. But when you add up all the felt pads you purchase and the time and gas it takes to get them and then apply them to your furniture, not counting if you had damage to your floors that had to be repaired because they didn't work.... This product pays for itself!
Here is a VIDEO of my husband Jesse applying the Flexi Felt to our square legged office chairs in our showroom. If you are in need of this product our anything else we may carry in our Products Available @ Wichita Wood Floor Specialists give us a call (316-747-4066) to place your order, or stop by our showroom at 3203 E. Douglas Wichita, KS 67218. We are in the heart of the Douglas Design District, door to the West of the Crown Uptown.

How to get a New Floor Without Having to Install a New Floor!
How on earth is it possible to get a completely different look to your floor without having to install a new floor? Easy! Wichita Wood Floor Specialists can take a normal 2&1/4 inch wide oak floor and make it into a 6& 3/4 inch wide plank!!
With our specialized tools and our wonderful Wood Artisans, we hand scrape and use specialized techniques to bring your average oak floor to an entire new level! Below is the picture of the original floor the customer began with. It is a 2&1/4 inch wide Red Oak Select. A beautiful floor, but very average here in Wichita, KS. The owners of this home wanted their floors to make a statement and have a one of a kind, personalized floor.

The owners of this home wanted their floors to make a statement and have a one of a kind, personalized floor.
The home owners decided that they would like their floors to look like a wider plank with a hand scrape look to it. We came in with our specialized tools and hand scrapers to scrape out the look of the wider planks. Below are pictures of an area we patched in because there was a fireplace that was removed. You can see the difference in the new wood and the old because we hadn't sanded the floor yet at this point. Just from this point in the job the floor has already taken on a completely different look!
Below is a picture of Jesse hand scraping the new beveled edges in between the "new" 6&3/4 inch plank. After he finished with all of the new edges, we sanded the floors down and then added the cross cuts, to give the boards a new plank look.
Once we sanded and hand scraped all of the floors, the next step was to stain the floor! Below are two pictures of the floor just after the stain was applied. After the stain dries over night we will be back in the morning to begin coating the floor.
The stain pictures were just taken this morning, so we have not yet coated the floor until tomorrow morning. But even without the finished pictures, you can already see the difference in the look of the floors from day one to today! The greatest thing about wood floors, is that the sky is the limit! There are so many unique and fun things that can be done to wood floors. We always tell our customers that their imagination is the limit! If you can dream it up, we can most certainly attempt to make it come true!
We want the world to look at wood floors as the true pieces of art they are. There is no one same floor when it comes down to it. Each home has wood from a different tree and each board has it's own finger print with the grain patterns. Give us a call today if you have an idea you would like to attempt with your wood floors. We love challenges! Wichita Wood Floor Specialists 316-747-4066.

What it Means to Hire a Certified Wood Floor Contractor
Contractors.... for some people just the word gives them the goosebumps! When you have a big project (like wood floors) that need to be completed around the house or office, you have a few different choices. You can either try to do it yourself, or you can hire someone. Most of the time when it comes to projects such as wood floors, YouTube videos or other publications may make it seem pretty easy. So there are a select few that will attempt to tackle the project on their own. 80% of the time after about a days worth of work they are on the phone trying to find a contractor to get the project completed.
Once the decision has been made to use a contractor, most people start stressing out trying to find the right one. This is completely understandable. Not only are you allowing someone you do not know into your home, you are allowing them basically to do surgery on your home and trusting them to meet your expectations of what you want completed. How do you even begin to try to find someone that can meet this criteria while being a stranger that you need to trust?
The National Wood Flooring Association has you covered! The NWFA is a non-profit that was founded simply to provide the best education and sources for anything that deal with Wood Floors. For contractors that want to be serious about wood floors, the NWFA provides several different level classes. Anything from wood floor basics to advanced level installing or finishing classes, even classes on how to sell the proper wood floor product to a customer.
Before the classes begin, the contractor must take it upon themselves to read up on the manuals and be mentally prepared for the classes. Once arrived, the students do hands on work with the wood. By the end of the week long class, the student must prove their knowledge by showing their craftsmanship as well as taking a written test. If they pass both sections, they then become certified for whichever class they took. The tests are not simple, and will really test the student on all different aspects of the course. Not everyone that takes the courses, pass them.
Thankfully though, the NWFA does list these fine contractors on their website for the consumer to find a certified contractor to help them with their hard wood flooring needs. You can simply go to: http://woodfloors.org/certified-professional-search.aspx and search for what you are needing in the area you live in. Simply choose what you need (installer, sand & finisher, etc.), the mileage range and your zip code. If for some reason you do not have a certified person in your area, you can call the office and they would be more than happy to assist you in your search of a qualified contractor.
So next time you hire a wood flooring contractor, be sure to ask them if they are certified through the National Wood Flooring Association. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at Wichita Wood Floor Specialists or call us at 316-747-4066. We love to talk wood!

What Does It Mean To Have A NWFA Certified Installer For Your Wood Floor Needs?
Good morning! It has been just over a year since the last blog, and my how things have changed in a year! Lets get caught up with some updates about where Wichita Wood Floor Specialists is before we dive into the good stuff.
This time last year Jesse and I began the search for a location for our very first store front. With a few struggles and disappointments, we finally found the perfect location! As of February 2015 WWFS opened their doors to the public at 3203 E. Douglas in Wichita, KS. We couldn't have asked for a better location (we are literally right next door to The Crown Uptown) or better neighbors!
As a small family owned business we have had many hiccups to get where we are today, but we have used all of those moments as learning experiences. With each other's support we have learned to tweak our methods, make changes and move on to strive to be the best wood floor company Wichita has ever seen. The end result is what you see today!
One of our main goal's is to have the best expertise in the field of wood floors. We understand that WWFS has not been in business for 20+ years, but we also understand that things change and we want to be educated with all of the changes so we can better educate all of you with the variety of options there are for wood floors now. We strive to not be stuck in a rut, only using the bare minimum standards to complete a floor, or to look at each customer as a "job". One of our favorite parts of being in the wood floor business is meeting all of the amazing people in our community. Jesse, our employees and myself all try to treat every single customer with a personal touch. Each and every single person is different so we try to truly listen to what your needs and wants are, and achieve those for you so that ultimately you are completely satisfied with the end result.
Okay! Enough about us, let's move on to the education part! What is the NWFA you might be asking. NWFA = National Wood Flooring Association. They are this beautiful nation's master of wood floors. This is where the top elite masters of wood floors come to learn, train and trade advice to each other. There have been some pretty amazing wood floor pictures floating around on social media lately, the ones that I see are actual NWFA member's floors. The latest picture I saw of what looks like the entire tree logs laid on the floor was the NWFA 2015 winner for Wood Floor of the Year. So needless to say, NWFA takes their floors pretty serious.
To become a member of NWFA, it is rather simple. You send in a check, sign some paperwork and there you have it, you are a member! It's what you do with that membership that will determine the expertise you gain from it. NWFA offers training courses that are available to become certified in a particular area of wood floors. Anything from installation of wood floors, to the selling of wood floors. For these certification courses you must study for hours ahead of time, have a good working knowledge and experience with wood floors, and prove not only your knowledge but your ability to implement that knowledge in a working environment. NWFA takes the certification courses very seriously and if you cannot prove your craftsmanship as well as your knowledge on the last day of training for test time, you will not pass certification.
With all of that being said, it takes a lot of dedication, hard work, knowledge and love of wood floors to become certified with the NWFA. A certified NWFA Installer will know the steps to take before the wood ever gets nailed to your subfloor. A good installation starts with the product being properly acclimated and the subfloor being properly prepared. A certified NWFA Installer knows what steps to take to make sure the pre-check list has been completed before the wood is installed. There are LOTS of people/companies that advertise they can install a wood floor and for the most part might get pretty lucky with not running into any issues while trying to install it. But... the issues may arise months or maybe even years down the road.
There are so many more things that go into installing a wood floor properly than nailing boards together to a sub floor. Is the temperature and humidity right in the house for a wood floor? Has there been enough spacing left around the edges of the room for the wood to expand and contrast with the different weather climates? Was the proper underlayment used and laid correctly for that particular floor? The list goes on and on. A certified NWFA Installer is educated on all the correct steps to assure the life of your wood floors.
WWFS understands installing a wood floor is a major time and monetary commitment. This is why we are certified through the NWFA for installation. We are the only company within a 175 mile radius that is certified for installation. To find a NWFA certified installer in your area simply click on this link: http://woodfloors.org/certified-professional-search.aspx and enter in your city information. So next time you are looking for a wood floor company be sure to ask them if they are certified through the NWFA.
Thanks for reading! As always comments and questions are welcome.

100x The Allowed Amount of Formaldehyde in Laminate Flooring Sold to the US!
Good morning! As a hardwood floor professional, I take it very seriously when I come across certain stories that can effect the health of uninformed consumers. I am a member of the National Wood Floor Association (NWFA), so I receive updates on current events from all over the nation on a pretty regular basis. When I came across this story about product being sold to the US at 100 x the formaldehyde limit, I felt that I needed to help spread the word in case someone has recently purchased this flooring and has no idea what it is that is in their home.
The original story was sent to me from NWFA through their Hardwood Floors magazine. Here is the link for you to read the original story: Formaldehyde Story Basically there is a company that has had several legal issues this past year that has now been selling a laminate floor product that has been manufactured in China with 100 x the allotted amount of Formaldehyde. So if you or anyone you know has purchased and installed a laminate floor from Lumber Liquidators, PLEASE read this story and follow up to see if it is the same product.
If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to contact us. I understand that it can be difficult sifting through different information from different sources when in the end you just want to make sure you and your family are safe! I hope this story will be shared by many others so the correct consumers will be informed. Thank you all for your help with this!

Why Professional Cleaning for Hardwood Floors?
Many people ask us why they should professionally clean and maintain their hardwood floors. They are stuck in the rut of believing they should keep up with their normal maintenance techniques and then call their local wood floor professionals every 5 years or so to get their floors sanded and refinished to look new again. This is a never ending rut and a pain in the neck people have to deal with every 5 years. I have even heard some folks say they would rather not have real wood floors because of this.
The simple truth is you shouldn't need to sand and refinish your wood floors that often. If you maintain them the way your local wood floor professionals have taught you AND you have your wood floors professionally cleaned every 6 months to a year you should not ever need to sand and refinish your floors. The thing most people don't realize is that when you have your floors professionally cleaned by a wood floor company (and not just a carpet company), they can actually chemically bond a new polyurethane finish coat to your floor. This is adding another protective layer to your floors and making them not only look beautiful again, but helping to protect them for a longer period of time.
Professionally cleaning them not only is less stressful on your home life compared to sanding and refinishing your floors, it is also less stressful to your wallet! So it just makes sense to call your local professional wood floor cleaning company. When contacting the company please make sure to ask them if they are able to chemically bond a new polyurethane finish coat to the floor. There are several companies out there that will only apply a Refinisher coat to the floor. In some circumstances the Refinisher is all the floor may need, but if that is the only coat the company offers it is a sure sign that they aren't truly educated on the needs of your floor.

Still Confused on How to Take Care of Hardwood Floors
Good Morning Everyone! Fall has definitely hit here in Kansas this morning. In this blog I really try to educate the public on how to properly maintain their hardwood floors. It never fails, we receive several phone calls a week with someone that has been using a "hardwood floor cleaning product" that seems to be leaving that very familiar white film on their floor. So today we are going to be reviewing some of the old blogs and try to put them all together for a "HOW TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN THOSE WOOD FLOORS" day! :)
Two of our most popular blogs were : Orange Glo... No Go! & Orange Glo - No Glo Part 2 Feel free to click on the links and review these very informative blogs. The first actually has information from Orange Glo's website informing consumers that they probably have a wax build up on their floor from their product.
Another good blog was our Maintaining Your Floors. This Blog has a few quick tips on how to properly maintain your hardwood floors. It is a quick easy read, and well worth it! One of our last popular blogs is Quick Tips for a Healthy Wood Floor! This Blog is an overall what to do and what not to do guide. These are your basic guidelines to follow to keep your hardwood floors "happy"!
Please feel free to skim through any of our earlier blogs and let us know if you have any questions. One of the best parts about what we do is helping to educate everyone on how to really maintain their hardwood floors. You can reach us @ 316-747-4066 or check out our website @ www.wichitawoodfloorcleaning.com Have a great week!

Ripping Out the Carpet *UPDATE*
Good morning! I am so excited about the progress of our floor! Unfortunately it has taken our floor a little longer to be completed, because our customer's floors are coming before ours (which is how it should be!) But I am thrilled that we are almost done.
Last night we put the first coat on the floor, and what a difference it made. The characteristics of the wood came to life over night. In case I forgot to mention it in the previous blog, we decided to go with a grade 2 white oak. We decided grade 2 for two simple reasons: 1. Cost wise it is cheaper than grade one. 2. The characteristics are amazing. There are a lot more multi-colored boards, with knot holes and all sorts of characteristics. Some people don't care for it, but we love it!

So we are in the home stretch! We have a few more coats to put on and then some dry time before we can replace any furniture, but it is coming along great.
The true confirmation was our four boys walking upstairs this morning to get ready for school and the "wow's" & "awesome's" we heard. It has definitely been a project, but by the end it is all worth it! There are so many advantages to us pulling out that old carpet and placing the hardwood floors. Obviously the beauty, but also the value it adds when we sell our house in the future. And we definitely can't forget the allergens! Our boys should definitely breathe better in our home now, which to me is priceless.
Visit our website @ www.wichitawoodfloorcleaning.com to learn more about our company and who we are. Feel free to leave comments, or give us a call at 316-747-4066 for any questions you may have. Have a great rest of the week! :)

Wives Tales of Hardwood Floors
Hello! Part of owning a hardwood flooring company is being asked how to properly maintain the wood floors. Over time people start to realize that the everyday cleaners you can purchase at the grocery store are actually wax based products leaving a film on their floors. So then they turn to the old wives tales for advise, because they have no where else to turn. So today we are going to go through these old wives tales and bring some light on the subject!
A good one I heard just last week was a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice with water. What is funny about this, is I came home and Googled it. As I was typing "lemon juice and vinegar for" a list of options came up. Here they are:
Another one I hear at least once a week is someone uses a steam mop on their wood floors. Lets think about this... What is steam? Exactly! You are taking super hot water and spreading it all over your wood floors. Eventually your floors are going to start peeling, cracking, and even whitening leaving a cloudy finish on your floors finish. I know they seem to work great on the home shopping network, AND they swear it's the best, easiest, safest thing to use on your hardwood floors. Just because it is safe on laminate flooring, does not make it safe on real hardwood floors. Do you use the same rag to clean ALL the same surfaces? (I know that is pretty extreme, but you get the idea!) Below is a picture of a damaged floor from a steam mop.

The good ol' wax and oil based products are next. These seem to be EVERYWHERE! Stay away from these products. A lot of the newer products don't advertise to have wax in them , but do some research and I'm sure you will find that the product is wax or oil based. Not only can these products damage the finish, they also leave a white film on the floor.
Why not use regular dusting products? You can use them on all of your real wood furniture, so why not on your real wood floors as well? Unless you want to make your floors into the slipperiest skating rink ever, I would suggest to use these products on furniture only. This way you will avoid any hospital visits also!
What about ammonia? This too over time will cause discoloration and deterioration to the floor. It will also dull the finish, taking years off the life of the floor.
And the #1 culprit when it comes to damaging wood floors? The wet mop! If you do in fact use a mop on your floor, it should NEVER be more than SLIGHTLY damp. Excess water is actually the most common way to damage your wood floors and finish.
Visit our earlier blog: Tips To A Clean Healthy Floor to see what you can do to properly maintain your wood floor. And don't forget to set up your yearly professional cleaning with your local trusted company. Just like carpets, wood floors need to be professionally cleaned and maintained at least once a year. For anyone in the Wichita, KS area you can call us at 316-747-4066 to set up you routine maintenance cleaning.

Ripping Out the Carpet
We have been a little slower this last week so we FINALLY had time to work on OUR house! We moved into our new home about two years ago and have been missing the wood floors from our old home. So with idle hands, we finally had the opportunity to rip out our carpet upstairs. Now, we have 4 boys between the ages of 7 and 12 along with a one year old Lab. I clean ALL the time, vacuum, dust, dishes, etc. But nothing could have prepared me for the amount of dirt that was trapped under all of that carpet padding!
I first felt ashamed and embarrassed, then a little angry. I had spent so much time cleaning those darn carpets, and for what? A HUGE amount of dirt to be left behind for us to live in! No wonder my family's allergies have been acting up since we have lived in this house.
Dirt no more! All of that old carpet and padding is out of here! We decided to go with white oak and it is completely installed now. The first of the sanding has been completed and now the filler is drying. What an exciting process, don't get me wrong it has been difficult at times not having a living room or dining room with our large family, but the end result is going to be priceless!
